IPS Overview and Student Profile
The International Preparatory Stream (IPS) at Ritsumeikan Uji
The International Preparatory Stream (IPS) at Ritsumeikan Uji Junior and Senior High School is designed to develop our young people as students and as people. The program is based on the philosophy of the International Baccalaureate (IB), but is specially designed for the needs of learners in Japan. We welcome motivated students who want to learn in English and develop and grow in a unique mixture of Japanese and Western atmosphere. As of 2017, IPS students study mathematics, science, social studies, and English literature in English, as well as participating in some of the major internationally-oriented events that our school participates in, such as the Model United Nations (MUN), and the Global Challenge Program (GCP).
Benefits of the IPS include:
- IPS has a unique fit-for-purpose curriculum emphasizing student inquiry, real world skills, critical thinking, and communication skills.
- IPS leads into the IB Course and the IB Diploma, the world standard in international English language education.
- IPS teaches study skills, time management, balance, and ability to prioritize.
- IPS creates lifelong learners and enables creativity, self-expression, and passion for knowledge and understanding.
Similar to the IB Course students, IPS students come from a wide variety of backgrounds and have lived and studied the world over. Our Student Profile for IPS students shares its core concepts with that of the IB Course, and IPS students regularly move up into the IB Course.
IPS Student Profile
IPS students are motivated to learn and excited by challenges. They have taken the option to join the most challenging course available. As junior high school first year students, they are not yet fully developed or fully aware of their strengths, but over their years in our programs they gain maturity and learn to be responsible for themselves and others.
IPS students are inquiring and strive to become self-directed learners. They respect their teachers and the learning process, but realize that to find their passion they need to seek out knowledge, information and opportunities, and not simply wait for these to be presented to them.
IPS students are balanced and over their time in the program they begin to learn to prioritize. They also begin to learn that there are many aspects to life and to learning, and although they make efforts in all areas, they prepare for success in high school and university by learning to focus on their core interests and core strengths.
IPS students begin to understand that success in school and life depends on doing what they love and loving what they do. They realize that success in IPS is ultimately not about being a genius or having perfect English, but about being open minded, participating, communicating and engaging with others and with life around them.
IPS English enhances critical reading and writing skills, and teaches literary analysis, discussion and debate skills, the organization of ideas, and prepares students for high school IBDP classes by increasing English fluency in all areas.
IPS Math develops a deep understanding of the foundations of higher math, builds problem solving skills and perseverance, and incorporates technological skills, logical thinking, and the ability to communicate through mathematical notation.
IPS Science builds logical, creative, analytical and abstract thinking through a focus on scientific inquiry and the scientific method. IPS Science classes feature small class size, and offer students many hands on activities with real science experiments and problems.
IPS Social Studies
IPS Social Studies introduces students to the study of human societies and human habitation on planet earth. Through IPS Social Studies, students gain a well-rounded understanding of the diversity of human culture, learn to think critically and propose solutions to social and political problems, and substantially develop their reading, writing, and research skills.
