About the IBDP |
The International Baccalaureate was founded by the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) in 1968 with the goal of offering the highest quality international education for its students. The IBO offers three programs: the Primary Years Programme (PYP), the Middle Years Programme (MYP), and the Diploma Programme (DP). Currently, there are 2719 authorized IB schools worldwide teaching 746’000 students. Many colleges and universities recognize IBDP graduates to be among the best educated high school students in the world, and IBDP holders are frequently given special consideration by top universities worldwide.
The IBDP is offered in the last two years of high school, and prepares students for university by focusing on six core curricular areas: literature, second language, social science, science, math, and the arts. In addition, IBDP students study Theory of Knowledge (TOK), a unique interdisciplinary class in epistemology, and participate in Creativity, Action and Service (CAS), a challenging extra-curricular program which allows students to develop their own service and creative activities and projects. Taken together, the curriculum, TOK, and CAS, coupled with IB schools’ focus on the IB Learner Profile, encourages student maturity and self-growth as well as significant community involvement and global awareness. |

About the IBDP and AIP at Ritsumeikan Uji |
The IBDP at Ritsumeikan Uji is part of our unique three year Advanced Immersion Program (AIP). Because the IBDP is a two year program, AIP students spend their first year preparing for IB classes and learning key skills and concepts that will help them access the IBDP. Students spend their second and third year taking IBDP classes of their choice and preparing for their final IB exams in November of their third year.
The Advanced Immersion Program (AIP) is a completely redesigned version of Ritsumeikan Uji's Immersion Program. Since 2002, Ritsumeikan Uji has been offering English immersion education to students seeking an international education in Japan. The new AIP (IBDP) will build on our years of experience in immersion to offer a high quality, well-rounded immersion curriculum which is explicitly focused on preparing students to be responsible participants in 21st century international society and to succeed in the increasingly competitive global education and labor markets.
Students in the AIP (IBDP) have access to all of the resources available to Ritsumeikan Uji students, but also benefit from small class sizes and a curriculum tailored for the needs of bi-lingual and near bi-lingual students. All of our classes are taught in English by native level speakers except Japanese class, which is tailored to fit the needs of returning students. In addition to maintaining a high level of English, students build critical thinking skills, presentation and public speaking abilities, research skills, essay writing fluency, and the ability to express themselves in a variety of communicative situations.

Who's it For? |
・Our course is designed primarily for students returning to Japan from overseas who want to keep up and improve their English ability and to gain a well-rounded, internationally competitive high school education.
・We also welcome applications from students who have attended international schools anywhere around the world, and from any student with good English ability and a strong desire to improve.
・In past years, immersion students have achieved TOEFL scores of 600 and higher (TOEFL PBT), and have successfully gone on to study at a variety of prestigious tertiary institutions. These include: various departments within the Ritsumeikan University system (including the popular international relations department); Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University; Ritsumeikan’s dual-degree program (DUDP) with American University in Washington D.C.; top Japanese universities other than Ritsumeikan; and colleges and universities in America, the United Kingdom, and Australia.
・Past graduates are also working for major Japanese companies such as Tokyo Broadcasting System (TBS), Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Company (SMBC), UFJ, Marubeni, and ROHM Semiconductor and Electronics. |

Atmosphere |
The AIP’ s (IBDP) small class size creates a friendly atmosphere that makes it easy for students to make friends and to enjoy a true community experience. AIP (IBDP) students create memories that will last far beyond the three years students spend together. In the AIP (IBDP), every student is unique; their experiences are valued and their characters are nurtured within a professional yet warm learning environment. AIP (IBDP) students are known and treated as individuals, and encouraged to take responsibility for their studies and their life in order to emerge from high school as independent learners and confident young adults.
Success Story: Although most IP students have been returnee, graduate from Japanese school can also be successful in the program

“When I lived in the United States I was in Japanese school. Because of this, I wasn’t good at English, and I was worried that my English ability would be lost when I went to high school in Japan. I knew that in the immersion course, I could take classes in English and I could maintain or improve my English ability, so I decided to go to Ritsumeikan Uji High School. Although I had some things to worry about; taking classes in English meant I also had to take tests in English and talk in English during classes. As I imagined, there were many immersion students who could speak English far better than me. I couldn’t help feeling uneasy that I couldn’t keep up with the students around me, but I tried hard, teachers kept teaching me until I could understand, and my classmates helped me out. As a result, I’m doing well on tests and I feel my English has improved. I realized that even if I’m from a Japanese school, I can do well in this class. Now I think it was good for me to join the immersion course.”

What's new? |
The Advanced Immersion Program retains the core elements of the Immersion Program, small class sizes, classes taught in English by native level speakers, and a strong international outlook, and builds in new aspects:
The AIP (IBDP) will offer students a chance to earn the world recognized IB Diploma. A good score on the Diploma could be students’ ticket to the best universities and research institutions around the world.
The AIP will have an increased focus on the visual arts, and students will have access to our first class art facilities.
Within the core academic subjects of English, literature, math, science, social studies and Japanese, AIP students will have the flexibility to begin to specialize by concentrating on subjects in which they have greater interest and ability.
The partial academic specialization built into the AIP (IBDP) will allow students to gain deeper knowledge and insight in their particular areas of interest while at the same time gaining a fully-rounded high school education.
AIP (IBDP) has a dedicated overseas college counselor who will assist students who wish to seek admissions to overseas universities. Our college counselor has particular knowledge of US universities, but can also assist a student who wishes to study anywhere in the world.

What's next? |
AIP (IBDP) graduates who perform well in high school will have the best of both worlds in terms of university options. Traditionally, most immersion students at Ritsumeikan Uji have opted to attend one of the Ritsumeikan universities. Like immersion students in the past, AIP students will be able to graduate with a Japanese High School Diploma and attend one of the three renowned Ritsumeikan campuses. Here, they may seek entrance into departments such as international relations, life sciences, law, engineering, and management, among many others.
However, because of the advanced level of our immersion curriculum and our authorization to offer the IBDP, AIP (IBDP) students who work hard through their three years should also be well-positioned to compete for admission at prestigious universities around the world. Thus, students who wish to continue their education outside Japan may use the AIP (IBDP) as a springboard to apply to universities in America, Europe, Australia, or anywhere they choose. Ritsumeikan Uji will fully support and assist students in their university preparation, and our staff will work closely with each student and their parents through the planning and application process.
